Tyholt Tower is a telecommunications and radio tower located in Trondheim. It was completed in 1984, with architect Nils Christian Ottesen designing the tower.
The tower has a total height of 124 meters, consisting of an 85-meter-high concrete section and a 45-meter-high steel section at the top. The terrain elevation where the tower stands is 118 meters above sea level. Primarily constructed as a radiolink hub, the tower also hosts antennas for radio and mobile telephony. However, Tyholt Tower has never been used for broadcasting the main channels of the national network and DAB.
The tower features an observation gallery at a height of 67 meters and a restaurant with a rotating floor at 74 meters. The floor completes one rotation per hour.
Currently owned by investor Karl Johan Kopreitan, Tyholt Tower's construction was initiated by Telenor. Telenor is responsible for operating the tower's electrical and technical components.
History:
Tyholt Tower is situated on the same site where Trøndelag broadcaster, or Tyholt Transmitter, once stood. Trøndelag broadcaster was a medium-wave transmitter (Marconi transmitter) with a transmitting power of 20 kW. A new transmitter from 1966 had a power of 10 kW and operated on the frequency 890 kHz, shared with transmitters in Bergen and Kristiansand. The shared frequency was noticeable during local broadcasts. The transmitter had two antenna towers, each 90 meters high, and operated from May 1930 until November 1, 1978.
