• This picture has been taken after the first winter snow in Trondheim in the midnight. I like the blue sky with the white snow on top of the beautiful wooden houses. Trondheim with picturesque, tiny, wooden houses. This idyllic neighbourhood on the east side of the Nidelva river features old timber buildings, originally the homes of the working class. Now restored, Bakklandet is a charming mixture of houses, shops and cafés.
• Nidelven has its very own song, Nidelven Stille og Vakker du er ("Nidelven [how] Still and Beautiful you are"). The popular waltz was written by Norwegian composer Oskar Hoddø (1916–1943). According to tradition, Hoddø wrote the waltz about the Nidelva River one night in late April 1940 while he was standing at Gamle Bybro in Trondheim.

King Olav Haraldsson was buried by Nidelven, the river Nid, after he was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in1030.

Tradition has it that the high Altar of the Cathedral now stands on the exact spot of this burial site. One year and five days after he died the King was declared a saint, and pilgrims began to flock to Nidaros and the King's grave.

The national sanctuary of Norway, built over the grave of St. Olav. Work began in 1070, but the oldest parts still in existence date from the middle of the twelfth century. These are in the Romanesque style, while most of the cathedral is Gothic in style. The building was completed in about 1300, but after being damaged several times by fire, it lay largely in ruins at the time of the Reformation in 1537. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later it was again restored to its original grandeur. The stained glass dates from the early 20th century. The sculptures on the west front are by leading Norwegian artists, and the most recent was erected in 1983. Below the nave is the crypt with headstones from the middle ages. (From Trondheim.com)

 • Picture has been taken around 12 p.m. The Gamlebybro (Old Town Bridge) has become a symbol of Trondheim and connects the two banks of the river Nidelven – the city centre and Bakklandet.

You have not truly been to Trondheim without having crossed the Old Town Bridge. The Old Town Bridge crosses the river Nidelven from the southern end of Kjøpmannsgata and connects the city centre with Bakklandet. Bakklandet is an exciting neighbourhood with inviting cafes and unique boutiques. The bike lift «Trampe» also has its starting point at Bakklandet. Text from Visit Norway.
