• Nidelven has its very own song, Nidelven Stille og Vakker du er ("Nidelven [how] Still and Beautiful you are"). The popular waltz was written by Norwegian composer Oskar Hoddø (1916–1943). According to tradition, Hoddø wrote the waltz about the Nidelva River one night in late April 1940 while he was standing at Gamle Bybro in Trondheim.

At Nidelva's outlet there have been seaside stalls, breweries and warehouses all the way from the oldest times. Here the towners traded with goods from far and near.

At the time of King Sverres, the bridges were also used as defense works. Towards the river, screens and times were built. From here you could throw stones on the enemy. In Magnus Lagabøte's city council of 1276, it is stated that the swallow, a passageway outside the bridges, should not be wider than three ales; further that between the brews should be "droplet" distance. The brewery that is still preserved is located on both sides of Nidelva - in Kjøpmannsgata, in Bakklandet, in Fjordgata and Sandgata. The oldest preserved breweries are from the mid-18th century.

Gamle Bybro crosses the Nidelva River from the south end of the main street Kjøpmannsgata connecting to the Trondheim neighborhood of Bakklandet. Gamle Bybro was constructed by Johan Caspar von Cicignon in 1681 in conjunction with the reconstruction of Trondheim after the great fire of 1681Johan Caspar von Cicignon laid out plans for the reconstruction of Trondheim as well as its fortification. Kristiansten Fortress was built at this time after his plans. The bridge location was of military-strategic significance. King Christian V of Denmark assumed the cost of construction. It was completed in 1685. The bridge was built in the vicinity of the original Elgeseter Bridge. When it was opened the older bridge was allowed to decay and collapse. Since then Gamle Bybro has undergone many changes. *Wikipedia

  • www.aziznasutiphotography.com Munkholmen (Norwegian: the monk's islet) is an islet north of Trondheim, Norway. It sits in the Trondheimsfjord about 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) northwest of the island of Brattøra and the mouth of the river Nidelva. The islet has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site. In the years prior to the founding of the city of Trondheim in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason, Munkholmen was used as an execution site by the Jarls of Lade. The arrival of Olav Tryggvason to Norway in 995 coincided with a revolt against Haakon Sigurdsson, who was killed by Tormod Kark. The severed heads of both Haakon and Kark were placed on stakes on Munkholmen facing out into the fjord to serve as a warning to visitors. Legend has it that before entering Trondheim, visitors were made to spit on these heads as a tribute to King Olav I of Norway. The tradition of displaying the severed heads of criminals and political opponents was continued for some time, but the heads were now placed so that they faced the city of Trondheim to deter its citizens from committing crimes.(Wiki)

King Olav Haraldsson was buried by Nidelven, the river Nid, after he was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in1030.

Tradition has it that the high Altar of the Cathedral now stands on the exact spot of this burial site. One year and five days after he died the King was declared a saint, and pilgrims began to flock to Nidaros and the King's grave.

The national sanctuary of Norway, built over the grave of St. Olav. Work began in 1070, but the oldest parts still in existence date from the middle of the twelfth century. These are in the Romanesque style, while most of the cathedral is Gothic in style. The building was completed in about 1300, but after being damaged several times by fire, it lay largely in ruins at the time of the Reformation in 1537. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later it was again restored to its original grandeur. The stained glass dates from the early 20th century. The sculptures on the west front are by leading Norwegian artists, and the most recent was erected in 1983. Below the nave is the crypt with headstones from the middle ages. (From Trondheim.com)

  • I have taken this panorama at 2 o'clock in the morning when a thick fog covered Trondheim. You can see some haze lights in the distance. Solsiden is a modern shopping centre consisting of 60 shops, in the buildings of the old shipyard. By the dock outside, there is a large open air bar & restaurant afrea, which is very popular in the summer season, especially on sunny days

• Aurora over Nidarosdomen (Domkirke) Nidaros Cathedral is a Church of Norway, located in the city of Trondheim in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. Built over the burial site of Saint Olaf, the king of Norway in the 11th century, who became the patron saint of the nation.
It was such a clear sky in Trondheim with fabulous northern light. It was so strong that you could see the dancing light even inside the city with all those light pollutions.

  • Verftsbrua (Norwegian for "Yard Bridge"), also popularly called Blomsterbrua ("Flower Bridge") is a bridge at the bay of Trondheim. The bridge, built in 2003, spans 125 metres. The name Verftsbrua comes from the nearby shipyard, Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted, while the name Blomsterbrua is due to the bridge being covered with many different kinds of coloured flowers. Please feel free to check my photos here or find me by: |Website| ,
