The Valsneset industrial area was established in the late 1970s, and in the late 1990s Valsneset became a central location in the work to establish wind power technology in Norway, which resulted in Trønderenergi establishing its first wind farm with five wind turbines in 2006. It also established a Norwegian test center for wind power technology with three licenses for testing different types of wind turbines. In 2019, the test center was replaced by a new wind power company, Vimle, which established itself with three new wind turbines at Valsneset, which can therefore be considered self-sufficient in electricity. The big breakthrough for Valsneset as an industrial area came in 2014, when Marine Harvest AS (now MOWI AS) opened its first feed factory with 50 employees and a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of fish feed for use in the aquaculture industry. In 2019, the number of employees had increased to approx. 90, and the factory sold fish feed for approx. NOK 4.5 billion. In 2021, the factory has received permission to further increase production up to 420,000 tonnes, and will thus be one of the world's largest factories for the production of fish feed. A factory called Fiizk Protection AS has also been established at Valsneset, which produces technical textiles for e.g. closed breeding cages for the farming industry.

  • Nidaros Cathedral is Norway's national sanctuary, and was built over the grave of St. Olav, Norway's patron saint.

Construction started in 1070, but the oldest parts still in existence are from the middle of the twelfth century. Ravaged by fire on several occasions, it lay largely in ruins at the time of the Reformation in 1537. The cathedral was rebuilt each time, mainly in the Gothic style, but the oldest parts around the transept reflect the Roman style. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later Nidaros was again restored to its original grandeur.

The west wall is the main façade of the church. The axis of the wall shows the crucified Christ in judgement; at the top, Christ enthroned in glory - the church was dedicated to Christ in medieval times, and was called Kristkirken, the Church of Christ. It is richly ornamented in stone, with magnificent stained glass windows from the twentieth century.

From around 1050 until the Reformation this cathedral was an important destination for pilgrims. This tradition has been revived with the opening of the pilgrim way in 1997.

Today the Cathedral continues to attract a great number of visitors. Each year it receive approximately 400,000 tourists from around the globe.

  • www.aziznasutiphotography.com Munkholmen (Norwegian: the monk's islet) is an islet north of Trondheim, Norway. It sits in the Trondheimsfjord about 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) northwest of the island of Brattøra and the mouth of the river Nidelva. The islet has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site. In the years prior to the founding of the city of Trondheim in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason, Munkholmen was used as an execution site by the Jarls of Lade. The arrival of Olav Tryggvason to Norway in 995 coincided with a revolt against Haakon Sigurdsson, who was killed by Tormod Kark. The severed heads of both Haakon and Kark were placed on stakes on Munkholmen facing out into the fjord to serve as a warning to visitors. Legend has it that before entering Trondheim, visitors were made to spit on these heads as a tribute to King Olav I of Norway. The tradition of displaying the severed heads of criminals and political opponents was continued for some time, but the heads were now placed so that they faced the city of Trondheim to deter its citizens from committing crimes.(Wiki)

The Trondheim canal, or rather canal harbour, was built during the 1870ies and was ready for use in 1884. It was built by raising the sandbanks utside town and building quays and railroad station on this articifially built island. The whole area is an island.
The quays at the seaside were built for ships going overseas and the quays on the town side for local ships. Between these quays a new central railway station for Trondheim was built.
When the railroad was changed from narrow gauge to normal gauge a lifting bridge was built at Skansen at the western part och the canal. This bridge was opened for traffic in 1918, and is the only lifting bridge for railroads in Norway that is still used.
In the eastern part of the canal there are to two lifting bridges for cars, but they are not in use any longer.
The canal has one further connection to the sea, the Ravnkloa canal. It runs from the midst of the canal out to the sea. There's a fixed bridge crossing the canal. Small sightseeingboats to the old castle Munkholmen use this canal in the sumnmer.

King Olav Haraldsson was buried by Nidelven, the river Nid, after he was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in1030.

Tradition has it that the high Altar of the Cathedral now stands on the exact spot of this burial site. One year and five days after he died the King was declared a saint, and pilgrims began to flock to Nidaros and the King's grave.

The national sanctuary of Norway, built over the grave of St. Olav. Work began in 1070, but the oldest parts still in existence date from the middle of the twelfth century. These are in the Romanesque style, while most of the cathedral is Gothic in style. The building was completed in about 1300, but after being damaged several times by fire, it lay largely in ruins at the time of the Reformation in 1537. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later it was again restored to its original grandeur. The stained glass dates from the early 20th century. The sculptures on the west front are by leading Norwegian artists, and the most recent was erected in 1983. Below the nave is the crypt with headstones from the middle ages. (From Trondheim.com)

  • Trondheim with picturesque, tiny, wooden houses. This idyllic neighbourhood on the east side of the Nidelva river features old timber buildings, originally the homes of the working class. Now restored, Bakklandet is a charming mixture of houses, shops and cafés.
Nidelva river cuts through the city, winding its way along the Nidarosdomen park and picturesque areas, with the historic, wooden wharf houses lining its sides towards the mouth at the Trondheim fjord, and the beautiful, wooden bridge amle Bybrocrossing the rive.

I have taken this photo in a calm winter nights with absolutely gorgeous lights around.
