  • www.aziznasutiphotography.com Munkholmen (Norwegian: the monk's islet) is an islet north of Trondheim, Norway. It sits in the Trondheimsfjord about 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) northwest of the island of Brattøra and the mouth of the river Nidelva. The islet has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site. In the years prior to the founding of the city of Trondheim in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason, Munkholmen was used as an execution site by the Jarls of Lade. The arrival of Olav Tryggvason to Norway in 995 coincided with a revolt against Haakon Sigurdsson, who was killed by Tormod Kark. The severed heads of both Haakon and Kark were placed on stakes on Munkholmen facing out into the fjord to serve as a warning to visitors. Legend has it that before entering Trondheim, visitors were made to spit on these heads as a tribute to King Olav I of Norway. The tradition of displaying the severed heads of criminals and political opponents was continued for some time, but the heads were now placed so that they faced the city of Trondheim to deter its citizens from committing crimes.(Wiki)

It was built after the city fire of Trondheim in 1681 to protect the city against attack from the east. Construction was finished in 1685. It fulfilled its purpose in 1718 when Swedish forces laid siege against Trondheim. The fortress was decommissioned in 1816 by king Charles XIV John.

  • One morning when I was going to my work office at Geological Survey of Norway, I saw a fantastic sunrise close by my office. In fact my working place located close enough to Trondheim fjord . Anyway, I had my camera with me and couldn stop myself not to go and take some shots. I went down to the coast and I already impressed by the unusual winter strong colors. I put the camera on the tripod and went as close possible to the waves. I was little bit scared as well because I am not a good swimmer
Anyway, I managed to get some very nice shots when I was standing still at least for 2-3 minutes.(Second picture)

  • Feel free to enjoy the tranquility of Jonsvatnet. Jonsvatnet is a lake in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. Most of the lake is in the eastern part of the municipality of Trondheim, with a very small part of the shoreline belonging to Malvik municipality. The lake is the main source for drinking water for Trondheim.

Any comment and feedback will be considered and highly appreciated.
